My husband has to relocate to US in the coming month. His company gave him two options to choose. One is Miami and another one is Charleston, SC. We are Asians from Vancouver,BC. If we don't move to any of the US locations, we have to move to Halifax, Canada. Is it a good choice if we choose Miami? Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I grew up in South Florida and think it is great for many but of the two (Miami or Charleston) would suggest Charleston more so because it's less overwhelming in terms of traffic and congestion, plus it's less crime ridden overall. Miami has many nice areas but they're often not far from the not so nice areas. Charleston offers more of a milder, temperate climate and will provide a sense of seasons which many find more appealing than consistent summer for 9-10 months of the year. If schools aren't a concern and the budget allows, I'd recommend living in the historic area of Charleston which offers a walkable lifestyle close to shops, restaurants and parks. If not the town of Mount Pleasant across the Bay from historic Charleston offers some great options as well. Good luck!

Thank you, Kyle. I read about Charleston and it was exactly what you wrote. My biggest concern is the lack of diverse community. Even in some part of Canada, I felt like I wasn't welcomed at all.
Personally, I prefer the old town life style. My husband has to decide at the end of this month. I hope for the best.

If you live in Miami, there are some very nice neighborhoods. Old Charleston (downtown) is incredibly charming in a way Miami can't compete, as it's much much newer.

Summertime, Charleston will actually feel hotter than Miami. Went there for a May wedding once with a group of Floridians and we all agreed it was the damn hottest place we'd been, lol. But, there'll be a break as mentioned above.

Charleston's biggest detraction is that it is in South Carolina.

I wouldn't factor Miami in as more welcoming because of the fact it's more diverse. The Latin community is fairly insular and not welcoming of other nationalities, more so than the Caucasian community in my opinion. Charleston's population (historic area) tends to be well-educated and fairly sophisticated which I think will bode well in terms of feeling welcome/accepted. Good luck!

I agree with this. Based on your situation, if these are the two choices would definitely go with Charleston. It is a nice city, IMO. As TriMT7 above says, a lot more charm. I agree about summer will feel steamier than Florida, but it does have more in the way of seasons. Also agree it's biggest detraction is being in SC, which is a state that I don't care for, other than Charleston and a couple other cities.

Good luck, hope this helps!

I'd take Miami in a second and I am not hispanic. I found hispanics welcoming, and tons of asians in Miami too. Miami is the most diverse place I ever lived, you would never be disappointed. There are huge asian populations in Miami just not as concentrated as hispanic or haitians.

Charleston is a very southern affluent community. Charleston still very much so has the good ole boys club. Charleston is certainly the most diverse place in South Carolina, but that is not saying much.
Charleston is absolutely beautiful and is in no way "new" it has wonderful historic charm. Out of all of the historic port cities (New Orleans, St Augustine, Savannah, Wilmington, Charleston etc.) I would say Charleston is the least diverse. CofC adds diversity to Charleston but not anymore than any run of the mill liberal arts college would.
Also if you are looking for perspectives on Charleston I would not post in the Florida thread you will get the grass is always greener perspective.
