Yep. A lot of those "sh*tty factory jobs" were able to boost many people (black and white) into the middle class. If they weren't outsourced to overseas then stuff like this probably would never have been said...

Exactly. As a matter of fact, I believe that historically, the auto industry in Detroit was singularly responsible for propelling more Blacks into the middle class than any other industry in any other city, including government in DC (which might be second).

I think both cities did a lot to help shape the American culture and history. Accolades given to one doesn't overshadow the other. Both have large AA populations so its obvious they've both contributed a lot.

Oprah and MJ were associated with Chicago when they were actually in Chicago. I don't associate Oprah with Chicago anymore other than that's where her old show originated; same with MJ, played with the Bulls back in the day.

I see her on campus from time to time too. I believe that she still goes back to the Chi quite a bit.

Set aside your personal political views for a second. Being able to claim the first African American president is pretty huge in terms of the prestige of the African American communities in both cities.

I'm not saying that the factory jobs or government employment didn't help propel blacks. But they were sh*tty compared to the work of their white counterparts.

Doubt that! Blacks in DC went from blue collar to white collar much quicker. DC's middle class has ALWAYS been much stronger than Detroit even in it's heyday.
