It would have to be LA, obviously.

LA is the #2 city, and much bigger than anywhere else (outside of NYC, of course).

Los Angeles. LA is a smaller and more star studded version of NY. Also warmer.

If NYC just ceased to exist today...LA or Chicago. I think they'd kind of both be considered the premiere cities, mainly because LA would be the largest city in the US and Chicago would now be the largest among the more classically urban cities. Over time, maybe even DC or the Bay Area, I could easily see either (or both) absorbing the bulk of NYC's industries.

If NYC never existed...Philly or Boston. These were the most important cities aside from NYC in America's earlier years...one of them would have likely become the US hub of business and culture. Maybe even Baltimore, it was much more prominent back then than it is now.
