I think anyone who has spent time in San Francisco is like me, and realizes how crappy it is there. The myth of San Francisco as a utopia is pretty much dead, almost everyone knows about the homelessness, terrible weather, expensive rents, etc. Believe it or not, Oakland of all places is now the city in the Bay Area that has the most boosters. Since so many transplants (read: yuppies and hipsters) from San Francisco are moving there, trying to convince everyone that they won't get robbed, or shot even though they usually end up moving into the bad parts in Oakland like the west and parts of the north.
Some things can't be "boosted." You can't "boost" Michael Jordan. You can't "boost" Tiger Woods. They're already the best. Same thing with NYC.
Oh puh-lease.....
I'm sorry, but I have never been that impressed with NYC. I really respect your right to your opinion, but in no way do I agree that NYC represents "the best". The biggest? Yes. The most diverse? You bet. The most to do? Very likely. But the booster club always fails to mention any of the negatives-- the expense and lack of bang for the buck, the sheer pain of getting from place to place in rush hour, the weather, the crazy landlords, the competition for every little thing.

It takes some serious stones for a NE booster to rag on another region's climate at a time like this.

I'm not the one who said "everybody bows to Gotham."
The OP says that "boosterism" is the act of promoting a city to improve its public perception. Well, the perception of NYC can't really be improved. There are so many threads on C-D titled, "The Second City for...," with the assumption (or explicit statement) that NYC is No. 1.
I have a challenge to the boosters (and you know who you are)--
find THREE things that you think are actually negative about your city. AND post without saying "my city is better than X/the best in the world/the center of the universe."
Can you do it?
Since SF, Philly and NYC seem to be mentioned the most so far, how about some of the PPs that have boosted them?

Yeah, I am the OP. And you aren't the most guilty party.
But just because a city is well known, heck even legendary, doesn't make public perception about it overwhelmingly positive. Just sayin. There are lots of people out there who think of NYC without feeling the love.

Yeah, there is definitely a lot of envy.
"Boosting" is when you're clearly overstating the case for a city. NYC posters merely point out that NYC is the biggest, densest, most visited, most urban and most famous city in the U.S. and some people perceive that as "gloating. But "gloating" is not the same as "boosting."
