The most striking similarities are the skylines (Houston actually has 20 more completed buildings over 400 feet), the super highways (I've heard Houston has bigger highways and bigger interchanges), the palm trees, and the presence of miles of beaches. Also the poor and upscale neighborhoods and shopping districts seem similar.
I think the absolute biggest differences between the two cities would be the differences in humidity and rainfall. Also Houston is less of a World class city than LA (obviously).

the highways are newer, but LA has far more lanes
Houston has one famous stretch that is wide, but short
Within this list, I'd say Miami due to the predominance of Latin American culture there. Obviously they're different Latin cultures with the Mexicans dominating Los Angeles while Cubans dominate Miami (though Los Angeles still has a much larger American element and Americans still predominate in many parts of Greater LA. ) Miami is totally a Latin American city while Los Angeles is a cross between an American city and a Latin city.
Outside of this poll, I would say that San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix are more like LA than Miami due to the climate and architecture.

Yes, and the beaches are removed from the downtown cores, another shared trait.
Imo, no city on this list. LA and NYC are two lifestyle polar opposites that can only be compared to cities outside of this country due to sheer scale coupled with sheer amenities.
In LA's case, I'd compare it to Sydney, Barca or Mexico City before I compare it to any city on this list.
^^^ LA is nothing like Barca, beyond having a beach.
True, Barca has a far superior transit system and urban design from what I've heard. I guess I was just comparing it to the fact that they both have a Mediterranean climate.
