Say each region had a capital, and each subregion had a capital also that couldn't be the regions capital.

Going by the official subregions:
Midwest- Chicago
East North Central- Detroit
West North Central - Minneapolis
Northeast- New York
New England- Boston
Mid Atlantic- Philadelphia
South- Atlanta
South Atlantic- Baltimore
East South Central- Memphis
West- Los Angeles
Pacific- San Francisco
Mountain- Denver

NYC is a Mid Atlantic city and capital of both the Mid Altantic and Northeast (the Northeast is made up of the Mid Atlantic and New England, NYC is a Mid Atlantic City - NJ is probably the quintessential Mid Atlantic State (Maybe MD next) also NJ may be the quintessential Northeast state as well)

DC is capital of all regions in the truest sense NYC is the city capital though probably in the US but definately for the Northeast and Mid Atlantic - Boston is the clear cut New England city capital, why because NYC is Mid Atlantic, not New England

The Mid Atlantic is NYC (Not NY state), Philadelphia (Not all of PA), New Jersey, Maryland, DC, and Delaware. Basically, coastal cities (or states) which are not in New England, and not in the south.

Northeast = Mid Atlantic + New England.

Yes on this I dont understand the confusion. Having lived most of life in this area I never thought it to be anything but Mid Atlantic, a part of the Northeast.

This continually baffles me

Default Boredatwork

People from New York don't consider NYC as the same region as Maryland. To me the mid Atlantic is from VA to Pa. People from NY claim Maryland to be "down south" like North Carolina or something. According to some folk the northeast doesn't start until Maine others claim the Northeast starts in VA. MARYLAND is quintessential midatlantic not too Yankee not too country smack in the middle of the map.

I have a few problems with this. One St.Louis is without a doubt NOT in the great plaines. Its located in the midwest on the missisippi. Kansas City would be a better capital for the great plaines because its actually the closest major city to the great plain states.

Second what is with texan cities the only capitals of the south? Texas is a part of the south but its a border state of the south and the west not to mention it has its own culture. Atlanta makes more sense as the capital of the south because its historically and culturally south in a state that is considered the center of the south.

The Bible belt city should probably be Birmingham or Memphis. Those cities are very religious

Some of the other catogeries for capitals dont make sense to me either

I agree. Although I would have Charlotte or Daytona Beach as capital of Racing

Yes, officially, it is. Baltimore is in Maryland, and Maryland is in the South Atlantic.
