The combined statistical area of Jackson, Mississippi's principal metro Vs "Rocket City" Huntsville Alabama.
Jackson has a small edge in size, but I believe Huntsville more than makes up for that in other areas. While both cities seem recession proof in spite of today's economic climate, which of these metros would you prefer?

Huntsville-Decatur, AL CSA - 557,715

Jackson-Yazoo City, MS CSA - 568,847

Criteria:
-Climate Preference
-Economy
-Education
-Attractions
-Retail Mix
-Parks/Scenery
-Freeway System
-Nightlife

1.) Climate Preference
Huntsville - Milder summers with cooler winters.

2.) Economy
Tie - Both are quite strong and believe me it shows.
Both have multiple projects in the works, but Jackson's downtown transformation is more distinguishable although Huntsville's population is growing almost twice as fast.
The next 5-10 years should be quite interesting for both metros as things really begin to take shape.

3.) Education
Huntsville - UAH, A&M and Oakwood University are notable.

4.) Attractions
Huntsville - Monte Sano State Park and Marshall Space Flight Center. Jackson has an in-town entertainment district under way as well.

5.) Retail Mix
Huntsville - Bridge Street propels Huntsville ahead by a nice margin, but Jackson I believe is moving forward with comparable Harbor Walk which should even the playing field quite a bit.

6.) Parks/Scenery
Huntsville - Scenery is subjective, but views of Huntsville from Monte Sano Mtn./State Park are spectacular. That is a significant advantage IMO.

7.) Freeway System
Jackson - Jackson's freeway system is more intelligible and the city seems a bit less confusing to navigate.

8.) Nightlife
Jackson - Jackson comes out ahead here from my experience, but it is subjective.

You have to be kidding me. I expected it to be neck and neck, especially considering the fact that Jackson is the larger city. What gives?

I 99% agree with both ATL_Aficionado and A&M Bulldawg.
The only area Jackson can compete in is nightlife, but I like to avoid drama at all costs and you're much more likely to find that in Jackson than Huntsville.

Huntsville is newer, well kept, and far better educated than Jackson. Jackson gets the nod on freeways and nightlife, but Huntsville's population ALONE takes it waaaay past Jackson for me.
