Seattle is Diverse with a strong Asian and Hispanic population. Diversity goes further then just black and white

A simple rule-of-thumb (which I hope no one will find offensive) is that states that had significant slave populations still have the highest percentage of blacks. Colorado and Washington were not slave areas and naturaly have a lower percentage of blacks.

Massachusetts was not a slave state, someone does not know their history.

How are Denver and Seattle not diverse? I know that they aren't the most ethnically diverse, but there's still noticeable divesity. Seattle has a higher Asian population percentage out of the three and Denver has a higher Hispanic population percentage out of the three. Boston does have a higher black percentage out of the three, therefore it wins the thread. Not sure about their metro areas.

I see someone already gave you a reference, but did you really had no idea Massachusetts was once a big slave state?

All of the original colonies had slavery except for, ironically, Georgia. It specifically started off free colony only but then pressured to have slaves by the other colonies in the mid-1700s. Massachusetts on the hand as Bideshi's link points out, was all about the slavery. First Native Americans and then Africans. Slavery in Massachusetts of course never reached the size of a Virginia or Mississippi, but it was there.

Back to the thread, there is no guess work needed, here are the African-American populations of all three metropolitan areas in order:

1. Boston - 337,751 (Ranked 21st among metros)
2. Seattle - 234,477 (Ranked 39th among metros)
3. Denver - 156,360 (Ranked 43rd among metros)

I must admit, I am surprised by the size of Seattle's black population. I had always assumed it was much lower than that.

I'm curious as to weather this number would include the Haitian and Cape Verdean populations.

I'm not surprised by Seattle's metro Black population due to the strong military presence. It has suburbs with similar or higher Black percentages than Seattle or Tacoma(with the latter also having a slightly higher Black percentage than Seattle).

People forget that suburbs/satellite cities in the Boston metro like Cambridge, Somerville, Lynn, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Milton, Brockton and Randolph have Black percentages around or above the national percentage. There are others with notable amounts as well. So, the Black presence goes outside of the city of Boston. Randolph may have the highest percentage in the area: US2010
