I am becoming more and more convinced New York is the only city in the US that genuinely has the complete package. Every other US city is lacking in one way or another.

Hold on a second you think most people know what and where Victoria peak is? Haha, go ahead ask people in your office and what not where Victoria Peak is.

I wasn't comparing Chicago to Hong Kong. I was saying that you argument that no global landmark does not equate to it not world class. While that is a weak attempt, Hong Kong does not have a global landmark either, so hence your argument it can't be world class either?

Oh wait, I guess when it comes to Hong Kong it's just different, right? Rule only applies when its convenient to your argument. Don't deny it.

Everyone also born pre-1995 knows about the Sears Tower and where it is.

What is Shanghai's landmark? or Hong Kong's? I guess they are not world class either.
I agree that alone does not make a city world class, but it is one of the tangibles.

It helps for sure, but that is not what you said earlier. But so are world class universities. University of Chicago is reknowned around the world. Where the atomic bomb was created and the entire Chilean economy was built. SF city proper doesn't have that. There is one tangible that Chicago has that SF doesn't.

My daughter, who is 11 and not a geography nerd, and also who grew up far, far away from Chicago -- in the Atlanta suburbs -- couldn't wait to see the Sears Tower when we went to Chicago. I didn't even know she knew what it was. (I didn't tell her what it was, where it was and why it's important and neither did my wife.) Somehow, she picked it up.

Travel to most corners of the world and show a picture of the Willis Tower most people would think it's New York or some other city with a vertical skyline.

It's very difficult to pin a skyscraper to a specific city unless your a skyscraper guru. Most people in the world are not.

One of the first things my mother's international students want to do is go see the Sears Tower. I always tell them that John Hancock is better

But it's still known? Is it iconic as the Golden Gate? No. But the point is people around the globe know about it.

Honestly, if a Hollywood sign posted on the side of mountain makes a city more world class than another, or if a suspension bridge makes a city more world class than the other, well I am sorry that is just a stupid argument.

It makes city more of a global icon but it doesn't make it more world CLASS.
