Downtowns-Maryland.

Economy-Its probably a draw. Georgia has a much more friendlier business climate than Maryland, however, MD is the most wealthiest state in the nation based on median household income.

Diversity-Maryland. It's a pretty diverse state overall with the bulk of that diversity concentrated in Montgomery, Howard, Baltimore, and to some extent, Prince George's and Charles Counties.

Culture-Depends on what you want/like. Georgia got the full on Southern culture along with the growing racial/ethnic diversity in parts of the ATL area. Maryland got the overall flavor of the Mid-Atlantic culture with a touch of the state's Southern past in the Eastern Shore, the Appalachian vibe of Western Maryland, and the growing influx of the Northeastern culture that's becoming prevalent in most parts of the state such as North and Central parts of the state along with the diverse mix of ethnic cultures here.

Attractions/Things to do-This might be another draw with a slight lead towards Maryland. In MD, we have Six Flags America, the Eastern Shore beaches and Assateague Island, many excursions and activities to do in Baltimore, Annapolis, National Harbor, Downtown Silver Spring, Downtown Hyattsville, etc., we have DC on our very doorstep along with Virginia just across the Potomac and we have basically the entire Bos-Wash corridor within our grasp, we have the kayaking on the Great Falls and the jogging/biking/hiking pathways along the Capital Crescent Trail, sailing, swimming, and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, and so much more.

In GA, you have Six Flags Over Georgia, Stone Mountain, many excursions and activities to do in Atlanta, Decatur, Macon, Rome, Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Sandy Springs, and Savannah. Also, the beaches on Georgia's Atlantic Coast and a closer trip to Florida and the Gulf Coast, St. Simons Island, Callaway Gardens, the Golden Isles, etc.

Retail/Restaurants-Idk. However, I kind of have a feeling that Georgia overall has better retail than Maryland.

Colleges/Universities/Education-This is a tough one. Maryland is one of the most educated states in the country and has arguably the best public school system as well. We also have at our disposal the University of Maryland in College Park, Baltimore City/County, Eastern Shore, UMUC, Bowie State University, Towson U, Frostburg State, Salisbury U, and Coppin State. I think Georgia might have a decent or even better lead in later education with the likes of Georgia State, University of Georgia, Emory, Georgia Tech, Spelman, Morehouse, SCAD, Mercer, Oglethorpe, Berry, Agnes Scott, etc. I would say MD K-12 education & GA Collegiate education.

Gay/Religious tolerance-I would say Maryland overall.

Roads/Highways/Bridges-Our infrastructure's not Pennsylvania's but I wouldn't be surprised if Georgia's is much better than Maryland's LOL

Quality of Life-Most likely Georgia. In GA, you'll have much more space, a more slow-paced lifestyle, and your money might go even further down there. Maryland is much more fast-paced, dense, urban, and expensive overall.

As to which I prefer, I am a little biased as I admit that I would still prefer Maryland being born and raised here just outside of DC and I'm proud of it. That being said though, I could definitely see myself living in Georgia. It's one of my most favorite Southern states and I wouldn't mind living in ATL, Savannah, or Augusta.
Very fair and balanced assessment. But I'm pretty surprised you missed Maryland's best university in the lineup.

Interestingly enough, both GA and MD are very similar when it comes to geography. Both states consists of relatively similar proportions of coastal plain, Piedmont, and Appalachia. The only difference really is that Georgia's coastal plain region is split between Gulf Coast and Atlantic:

I give Georgia the edge in culture. James Oglethrope, the colonist, the Creek nation indians all rule the state in very rich history and culture.

My biases are towards Maryland of course, but I am huge advocate for changing the state's current political atmosphere that is ridiculously skewed towards the left. When I think of Georgia, I think more about Atlanta than anything which is a very cool city but I could never live there only because I'm not a huge fan of the "pop-culture" life of the city, but don't get me wrong, I love to visit Atlanta, I just couldn't live there. Maryland is in the middle of the East Coast (or Eastern Border for those who believe the East Coast stop's in Maryland) therefore it offers closer proximity to cities that I prefer. What I don't like about Maryland is our lack of encouragement and incentives for businesses, and with that being said, you get the vibe that the State is heavily reliant on the federal gov't wherever you really go especially on a drive on highways such as Baltimore-Washington Park Way where you see signs like "NSA", "DO NOT ENTER", "NASA", "Fort Meade", Etc.

Our education system is great as well as our healthcare system, and overall our people seem a bit more happy. As someone from NC, I prefer Georgia's food over Maryland's. I would imagine Georgia's coastline is better than Maryland's, and you guys are much closer to America's favorite beaches in Florida therefore that's a major plus. Speaking of travel, you guys also have the world's most traveled airport therefore I'm positive one could get to cities around the world in more convenience than our Airports. I like how much more of the buildings in Atlanta, look newer than many of ours and I like the people of that area as well.

It's very easy to isolate yourself from that element here; don't get me wrong, if you want that, you can get it, but if you want the more low-key, everyday type of scene, it's in abundance here too. Visiting and living here are two different things.
