But it isn't strange. People know where and what Virginia Beach or Norfolk or Newport News is. "Hampton Roads" doesn't mean anything to most outside the area and many won't have a clue where that is.
I think it's disingenuous to refer to the area by individual cities, though. It just feels... unnatural.

I don't think nomenclature has anything to do with it; however you want to refer to the region, it's pretty overlooked. I think a big reason for that is the fact that, as was stated, it's essentially a cul-de-sac; it's not on the way to anything. But then again, neither is Myrtle Beach (it doesn't even have interstate access) yet it's one of the nation's fastest-growing metros right now. It's kinda weird.
"It will be the nation’s first transfer terminal for cargo in containers (TEU’s) strategically designed to serve container vessels too large to enter in to the Mississippi River thereby preserving market share and enhancing growth of the container market share for the Port of New Orleans"
Louisiana exports have doubled since 2009. The countries rail system cannot handle the cross country traffic it is getting, sending things coming in from China to the middle of the country. If you read the link, you will see that the port is also going to be handling a lot of Eastern Asian - Western European trade as well. Many new studies are coming out showing that the cheapest place to set up for trade in the country is at the mouth of the river. Industrial investment between New Orleans and Baton Rouge has been massive and recent deals made by the Department of Commerce are reinforcing that the state will only see more.
Louisiana is changing. New Orleans will be stealing a lot of cargo from a lot of places due to this port and the Panama Canal expansion to allow new vessels from Asia into the gulf will probably be docking here more than anywhere.
Nashville is clearly the winner here....Not even close with the other cities. Nashville is Major league, the others are not,,, even though a couple might have some major league teams repped. The least likely to get a major league team would be Birmingham, I could see Richmond or at least Hampton Roads get an NBA team.

So besides your inexplicable hate for anything NC-related, how is Nashville "major league" and Raleigh not? And please, let's try not to go down the "Raleigh is boring, bland, blah blah blah" road...something substantive would be helpful here.
