There are 5 world class cities currently: NYC, SF, Chicago, DC, and LA. I believe there are four emerging world class cities: Houston, Atlanta, Boston, and Seattle. I believe Boston is right on the line and could reach world class status in the next decade. I think the other three still need 2-3 decades at the minimum for different reasons.
If you're going to list Houston and Atlanta why are you omitting Miami and Dallas?
I voted for Dallas though I think it could be either Dallas or Houston. After that, I'd say Atlanta and then Seattle. Detroit and some of the other rust belt cities had their day but it will be a long time before they ever regain their luster. It's a shame. Detroit was one of the wealthiest and most important cities in America for the first half of the 20th Century and its former stature remains in its vast collection of ornate mansions and towers such as The Fisher Building and Cadillac Place.

I think he had the order right.
Boston in my opinion is right outside the top 5 then Houston and ATL. Then Miami and then DFW.
Boston and Houston have world class economies and Boston has world class education.
Atlanta doesn't have as big an economy as DFW but Atlanta has multiple things that make it rank higher in my opinion.
1. New York - world class everything
2. Los Angeles- international economy, Shipping, manufacturing, entertainment/media, Tourism, Arts
3. The Bay Area- international economy, technology, finance, education, Arts
4. DC- Government, Arts, Tourism
5. Chicago- manufacturing, logistics, finance, Education Arts
6. Boston- international economy, finance, education, arts, biotechnology, medicine
7. Houston- international economy, shipping, manufacturing, arts, medicine
8. Atlanta- education, media, arts
9. Miami- tourism,
10. DFW- not really excellent in anything, but sizable in many things.
Ant left out Philadelphia which I would list ahead of ATL, Miami and DFW. Philadelphia has world class education, arts, pharmaceutical development, shipping, etc.
Edit: I forgot Seattle. It excels globally in manufacturing, shipping, it has good universities.

Philly is ahead of Houston as well. Philly and Boston are a tie. I would also add education in DC's category.
Charlotte is an odd one on the list. Hate to pick on any city but here are cities not listed that I would list before charlotte:
Boston
Philadelphia
Portland
Pittsburgh
st Louis
Cincinnati
Indianapolis
Las Vegas
Milwaukee
And maybe Orlando, San Antonio, Nashville and new Orleans
Boston & Philadelphia is already in the group. Why list it? Also I wouldn't put Portland ahead of Charlotte.
