I've lived all of my life in California (Southern Cal and the Bay Area), and I would have to agree that Los Angeles has the worst traffic, on a consistent basis and traffic can be awful, anytime of the day or night. However, the rush hour traffic in San Francisco and the Bay Area is no picnic, either.

Other cities with bad traffic that I have visited: Phoenix, Seattle, New York, DC, Boston, Houston, Atlanta, San Diego, and Austin.

I nominate these as the runners up:

2.Chicago
3.New York
4. Houston
5. Atlanta

6. The rest.
That list is worthless without DC and Miami

If we're talking about just the city, and not the metro area, then NYC has the worst traffic in the country.

Depends on time of day & week. Rush hours M-F can be bad but LA is worse, and Boston worse still (although on a smaller scale)

edit: looks like they have GPS data on this sort of stuff, LA is the worst in the United States, 10th overall on the earth:

Was just in Chicago and it was HORRIBLE. It took me 2 hours to get from The White Socks Stadium to Evanston. I was on 94 but it was really backed up so I went to Lakeshore Drive so I felt gridlocked. The traffic is horrific. Avoid driving during rush hour at all cost!

What a minute...how can you ask this question and then not even put WASHINGTON DC in the poll?!?

DC is by far the worst traffic I have EVER seen.

Every list I have seen puts NYC ahead of Boston for traffic. Based on my experience, I would have to agree.

Are those the only three cities you've ever been to?

Los Angeles is the worst for sure, but I can say without a doubt that DC, Miami, and New York are worse than Chicago and Atlanta.

The problem in Boston is that there are lots of areas that are a circular maze of streets with only a single point of exit. God help you if you're stuck in one of those areas during rush hour
