Yes, thank you! First thing I thought when I saw the post title is that Texas better not be on that list. Sure, east Texas is quite southern but Texas is a big state and "southern" doesn't really fit anything west of Tyler.

I definitely do not agree that Texas is much more Southern in culture than VA.

I'll let my family and friends in Miami know that they aren't Southern.

If the OP doesn't want to include Texas into his "south" then I suppose that's his right.

I am going to vote for North Carolina as being the "best" southern state, and probably would pick North Carolina even if Texas was included simply because NC has more bang for the buck in regards to scenery.

CRITERIA:
Diversity of scenery: NC, VA, and to a lesser degree GA all have beaches and mountains. IMO offers NC the best combo.
Quality of scenery: NC: I think their beaches are nicer than VA. Fla has the nicest beaches, but no mountains.
Culture: Louisiana b/c of the French influence, feels more unusual.
Cities: Louisiana b/c of NOLA. I also really like Nashville and Charleston. The NC cities seem to have very bright futures.
Outdoor activities: Gonna go w/ NC again b/c of the diversity of options. VA, FL, and GA are close. Fla has the best diving
Shopping: Georgia b/c of the shopping in Atlanta, w/ VA close b/c of NOVA.
Dining: Louisiana: I love all the specialties down in LA: gumbo, jambalaya, po-boys, etc
People: This one is tough. Nice people and jerks all over.
Weather: North Carolina: not quite as hot as most of the south.
Economy: Virginia has the best economy I think. Some of the richest counties in the country are in NOVA, and it has low unemployment and higher GDP per capita than other southern states.
Crime Rate: This is probably either VA or KY. Most southern states have pretty high violent crime rate

Additional categories
Higher Education: VA: excellent schools like UVA, William & Mary, and Washington & Lee. NC and GA also get points here.
History: VA probably get the nod w/ its huge role in early America and being the birthplace of 8 presidents.

Lots of great states in the South. NC, GA, VA, LA, SC, TN, and KY all get points using the criteria above.

Overall I'm going to go with NC by a touch b/c of the great beaches and mountains plus weather that is a bit milder, growing cities, and good universities.

VA, GA, and LA all gave strong competition.

Georgia is in the lead? God Bless America! Atlanta has to be the greatest city known to man.
Seriously though. North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia in that order.
