This idea came to me from the "New Orleans is the New York" of the south thread.
In the other thread, it seems that a lot of people believe Atlanta holds the title, but what about Houston, Dallas, or Miami (I know some people don't consider these cities to be southern)?
What's the consensus?

I think the south should aspire to get a Chicago of the south first.

Or the Chicago of the North but would it be Boston, DC or Philly?

There is no New York of the South and there never will be one. Nor should there be one. Same with a Chicago of the South. I don't hear Chicagoans walking around saying they are the New York of the Midwest. Chicago stands it's own two feet.

Doesn't exist. Nor will it ever.

But, if you are looking to find near-death NYC natives from a different era, unquestionably Miami.

There isn't one, period. But the closest thing would be Southeast Florida.

For what it's worth, an old Georgia nickname seldom heard or used anymore was "Empire State of the South". It was used on the state license plates up to some point in the 1960's.

In terms of culture, pace of life, Miami and specifically Miami Beach. South Beach (a neighborhood of Miami Beach) is very urban, very Brooklyn-esque in many ways. A lot of the people here in Miami Beach are either Europeans or Latins or East Coast natives.

There isn't one....there is only one New York, as their should be. There is only one Chicago, as their should be.
There is only one Atlanta, only one New Orleans, only one Miami, only one Dallas... and so on and so on.....shouldn't be more than one, who would want a cookie cutter version of another persons city?
