If you speed, limit is 65 on the Thruway, and you still have to go thru Syracuse, Utica, Albany and Poughkeepsie before getting there, and most people I know myself included can't go what can amount to 7-8 hrs in reality without at least a bathroom break
The thruway is not the way to go. That will take close to 7 hours. You can make it to NYC in 5 - 5.5 hours if you cut down 81 and take 80 east. Personally, I used to even take 390 south to catch 81 because I don't like the thruway.

This right here and you can do it toll free going this way versus the long way that the previous poster mentioned.

You have to drive thru the Catskills/Poconos/Appalachians going that way though, and in a heavy vehicle, the hills will slow you down (you'd be surprised how only a 5% grade uphill can effect a semi)
Where with the thruway, you are entirely at low elevation

Were you can your friends taking a weekend trip in a Semi?
Rochester is 5.5hrs from NYC unless you take an absurdly roundabout way.
It's like Birmingham-NOLA

Well, I am a truck driver, so most of the driving I do these days is in a truck, so that is my basis of thought. LA to Phoenix is 360 miles, but is a much easier drive, that took 6 hrs in a car when I would drive it, it's 7 in a semi, I do this run alot (mainly due to truck speed limit of 55 in California), and is over half open desert.
But anyways, driving to NYC isn't worth it if you will be in Manhattan, your better off flying

No, you don't drive through the Catskills going 390 to 86 to 81 to 380 to 80 into NYC. You may drive by the Poconos, but that is it. It is about 5-5.5 hours to NYC from Rochester. It is an all interstate highway drive as well.
Also, you park at a train station near NYC and take the train into the city.

Yup, we'd always take Metro North in.
