NC State is no slouch of a school. it's not on Vandy's level, but it's the biggest University in the state and has a great engineering and agricultural pedigree. The Triangle has Duke and UNC as well.
Vanderbilt >> NC State for intellectualism, anti-Southern prejudices notwithstanding.
That may be true, idk.
But NC as a state seems to value education more than TN does, and the triangle area in particular is certainly better educated than Nashville is. Public schools, K-college, are where most people receive their educations, so, imo, the state of public education in any community is an accurate barometer of the importance it places on education.
The low education levels of the population in and around Nashville, as the capital city of Tennessee, astound me. Metro Nashville Public Schools, as a significant example of public education, do not perform well. And educational outcomes for TN, overall, by many different reports, are low.
To be fair, few peer metros are as educated as the Triangle. However, with a very robust collection of colleges and universities, Nashville does better than many other similarly-sized metros when it comes to higher education/educational attainment.
Duke and UNC are right next door to Raleigh and clearly contribute to the intellectual vibe.
This is about Raleigh... and I know kids who were rejected by Vandy but accepted by Duke. Belmont and TSU are also actually within the Nashville city limits. Among several other very respected schools.
Raleigh can't claim Duke anymore than Nashville can claim MTSU, or Sewanee.

MTSU? Isn't that like a tier 3 school?
GWB was accepted by Harvard and rejected by UT. It's about as relevant as your analogy. What is TSU? Tennessee St? Laughable. UNC is a top 5 public as well. Education wise, Nashville isn't close.

And all this time I thought the title of the thread was Nashville vs Raleigh/Durham.
Even so, focusing strictly on city limits is pretty stupid and arbitrary here. You'd look pretty silly saying Boston can't claim Harvard or MIT or that Chicago can't claim Northwestern.

And who the hell gets rejected by Vanderbilt but accepted by Duke? I LOL'd at that one.
