What are the cities with the highest murders within a year in the country's history? I'm not speaking rate but strictly total. Looking at it historically and mainly through the 1900s since our country's homicides was worst during that century. The first 3 are easy but the rest aren't for sure.

1. NYC - 2,245 (1990)
2. L.A City - 1, 092 (1992)
3. Chicago - 970 (1974)
4. - 20. ?

Probably best to look at it per capita. Otherwise the larger cities appear to be more dangerous than they actually are.

I could be slightly off with my numbers but Washington DC had around 490 murders in 1991 or 92'. The city's population at the time was only about 580,000, earning the nation's capital the distinct title of "murder capital."

Looking at raw numbers makes no sense. Neither New York, LA, nor Chi have ever had a murder rate eclipse 40 per 100k; in fact, I don't think any have ever has a rate over 35/100k...

I know this: New Orleans, Jacksonville and Richmond are the only Southern cities to have ever had a rate of over 75 per 100k. Richmond and New Orleans, in fact, have both done it more than once...

@ Murksiderock & @ Peterlongjello

As I said before , this isn't based on rate but the TOTAL in our country's history. I'm not looking at "dangerous, deadly, worst, etc." ; Historic overall. Side note: The smaller the population & larger the incidents will always give it a high rate. That's why rate doesn't matter to me.

According to this article, Houston recorded 701 homicides in 1981.
Houston homicide rate may be worst in a decade - Houston Chronicle

I don't know if by sheer number if any city is above that number for 4th.

@Jamez
Not over a time frame but highest in our country's history within a single year not time period. Funky monkey did it right.

@ Funky monkey
Your positions are wrong and some of the info is inaccurate. Already have Chicago at third with 970 in 1974. I notice that Detroit's highest was in the 70s too. Matter of fact, Some of the highest for large Mid-west cities was in the 70s. I can't recall Detroit , St.Louis, nor Cleveland's at that time big its higher than that unfortunately. Houston should be 4 or 5 with 701 in 1980/1 .

But why limit yourself to just total, raw numbers? That's a fairly quick way to end the thread, and fairly boring as well (your question has already been mostly answered by funkymonkey). The per capita listings add a new angle to the discussion, and give these murders more context.
