Your positions are wrong and some of the info is inaccurate. Already have Chicago at third with 970 in 1974. I notice that Detroit's highest was in the 70s too. Matter of fact, Some of the highest for large Mid-west cities was in the 70s. I can't recall Detroit , St.Louis, nor Cleveland's at that time big its higher than that unfortunately. Houston should be 4 or 5 with 701 in 1980/1 .
I should have said in the post, but you can see from the linked spreadsheet that this is data from 1985-2012. I guess older data might be available but as far as I know it's harder to process easily.

Jacksonville??? What year did Jacksonville have a rate that high?

1927...

Lol not in the modern era. But Richmond and New Orleans both have many years excluded from @funkymonkey's list, although he gives a pretty good summation...

I actually appreciate the OP's desired direction of this thread with regard to it being about raw numbers and not rates. I remember when I was little hearing that 2,000 plus number for New York City and just being shocked. I really don't have the same amount of shock when seeing murder rates.

When Juarez was going through its very violent period in recent years I was similarly more captivated by the sheer numbers in those years, especially the 3,000 figure in its worst year (2010). The murder rates in those years were astronomical for Juarez, but even still, I thought more in terms of how many killings there were in a day. There were an average of 8 killings a day in Juarez in its worst year.

Sheer numbers are less abstract and really make me think about all the people who have died violent deaths much more than a murder rate does.

I'll go ahead and contribute Albuquerque's worst-ever total to this thread. It was 70 murders in 1996.

Because the raw numbers gives as much context or more than rate. The rate have to be calculated off the incidents & population, which means no incidents then no rate obviously. The counter argument boils down to Total with generally all big cities (100K +) contribute large cases while the higher rates goes to those cities with lesser population then the bigger ones with higher incidents. Also when people see these rates , they tend to go down the "If" theory ( If this city had this rate then the total would be xxxx). In layman terms , You tell someone the rate then they scratching their head but tell them the basic total then it be clearer. Jackson have 31 per 100K vs Chicago's 10 per 100K, so Jackson is more cautious? No both are cautious but Chicago is 400+ vs Jackson's 50+ . Yeah the rate doesn't show the depth of incidents. Again , My opinion.

I seen the spreadsheet and the data that's harder are pre 60s. Generally I search google using "peak" or "highest" for the specific city and news archive too. Overall not too shabby.
