These two downtowns are among the most vibrant in US/Canada after NYC. Which do you think is more complete? Compare on the following criteria:
*lack of surface parking lots
*amount of retail
*transit ridership into and out of the core
*pedestrian volumes
*seamless integration into adjacent neighborhoods (i.e the built form doesn't change drastically once you exit downtown; nor does the pedestrian volume enormously diminish)
*24-hour services (aside from bars open late): restaurants, laundromats, fitness centers, etc.
*general amount of activity NOT INCLUDING major city events
For Downtown Montreal, DO include Old Montreal. For Center City Philly, DO include University City. These neighborhoods are functionally contiguous with the cores, though respectively cut off by a freeway and a river.
Talked to an associate from Montreal recently . His words " Philadelphia makes Montreal seem like a suburb".
Highly doubt that. I've never gone to Philly but from what friends and colleagues of mine have said they're on even ground with a slight pedestrian advantage to MTL.

this is what I have always been told too. Never been to Montreal before, but would like to.

We have a large downtown, 720,000+ daytime pop. within the 18 km sq. radius. It's probably more now with all the new developments, a lot more people moving back and it's very active. Population of the downtown is 120K+, and if they add Le Plateau, Westmount and some other parts to a "greater downtown area" it'll be at least 250-300K.
Center city and University City combined Pop. , greater center city 200k and university city 60k ,260 k .Here is fact that is very promising for Philly , center city had > 50 % increase of millennials since 2006 and 64% of Philly university grads plan on staying in Philly at least 5 yrs .On the retail front 2.5 million ft.^2 is in construction . Center City is a 24/7 happening .Short video showing Philly in motion . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnfZeToSTL4
Both great downtowns. I would say Montreal feels a little more polished and cosmopolitan. Better transit, better retail, etc.
The first Philly video is from 2009. A lot has happened on Walnut St since then as it has in the rest of Center City. The Chestnut St is also old. Too old to reflect how much is changing on that street.
