Houston us definitely more integrated, and probably more international too.

What I do care about is data. And the data on segregation in Chicago shows Im correct and youre wrong.

Below is the data on dissimilarity index. It is the only true measure to segregation.

CensusScope -- Segregation: Dissimilarity Indices
LOL, you should check out my post history if you think I don't discuss Chicago's flaws. I know people who are here two months and dating outside of their race. Maybe you just didn't meet anyone in your two years? I've literally dated members of every race while in Chicago, lol. Interracial marriages are common in Illinois. I believe the state is in or near the top five for interracial marriages.

Fight the data, not me. I didn't make up those links.

The data you're showing reiterates what we've already agreed to. Chicago is more segregated than Houston. That doesn't mean Houston is an integrated utopia or that Chicago is full of intolerant racists. Chicago these days is segregated by INCOME, not race. The two are correlated though, although I know several middle and upper class black, Hispanic, and Asian people who live in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Old Town, etc.

It really does. My sister used to live in Houston and I went in with a pretty negative mindset visiting her and I actually enjoyed myself. And with it's 2.5 hour proximity to Austin and 50 minutes to the nearest ocean, I'd take it over Chicago.

COL, weather, and quality of live alone, I think also HOU had it over Chi-Town. That's just me.

This thread has lost its senses on the topic of the OP. It's a thread between a former Chicagoan in Cali. That now has a bone to pick. Seemingly wanting to stir the pot with things he post against Chicago as seems to be his aim to demean Chicagos. Almost any city. As noted earlier in the thread as WRONG by more the one poster. Another lives in the Houston Metro and happy there feeling a bit looked down on for race. Personal views that are emotionally felt I just respect it as their experience. But Ethnic White European immigrants did the same segregation. Mostly by common Religion and traditions. Its widely known back in the day. The Irish were seen as the lessor Ethnic group. The story of Mrs O'Leary and her cow kicking the latern causing the Great Chicago fire. Was fabricated. But to blame the Irish was key to it being believed. It was in the Irish Ghetto the fire started.

I heard stories on my hometown a small city in PA. European Whites were segregated by nationality and Protesant or Catholic parts of town. A older Italian neighbor told me the story of how she being Italian. Was not to date a Polish not. Her brothers were to prevent it. But of course it happened. Another older women I worked with in basically the suburb. Was once the city had mostly Catholics and the country Protesant farmers. So when farms got lots sold for new homes. The Italian, Irish, Polish and Ukarainian Catholics from the towns and cities. By being money savers. To them built New homes outside the city among the Protesant Farming rural areas. But word was out. NO farmer was to sell land for a Catholic Church. This was early 60s. Of course one did and then skippped town LOL. Now all basically get along and intermartied. But that Was still how even between White folk. Differences caused segregation and these other issues.

So still there are aspects of African-American culture and music. That some still find radical and too different to mix in a neighborhood where they live. But no problem to work together etc. But today it still is far more segregated by social status that generally income and housing cost cause degrees of segregating poorer folk out.

We act as Skin color is as if the only reason to use the term segregated for? But there are many other ways we segregate. Especially back in a day and other nationalities did the segregating and not by skin color.

The more things change sometimes? The more it's just similar reasons but different people's today. He'll Liberal/Consevative is a big fighting point today and dislike. City folk being more Liberal vs. more suburban and rural more Conservative.

The thing with the North and begining in the 50s into 60s as 10s of thousands of Souther African Americsns. Migrated to Norhern major cities. Radical Racial change happened too fast and history notes the problems that changed our cities.

Southern cities had little of that Change. So segregation in that 50s 60s radical change. Was not much if Houston's then. But certainly was so with Chicago. But time in Northern big cities. Back in that era. You looked like a Hippie or did not manicure your front lawn and wash your Windows and not look groomed totally. These same people who looked down by race. Also did by these other reasons between their own race.

But any who I've saw a few questions on the thread. My husband use to work in politics but now is a bartender also. We make pretty good money and could afford both Chicago and Houston but I'm into owning a house not a small house.

I just don't like the grind of Miami. For the quality of life here, I think its too expensive. Compared to say LA, yes LA is expensive but the quality of life makes up for it.

I'm looking for this to be our last move. I want a city that is family friendly and friendly people. Lots of activities for the kids, but also a big nightlife. Good public schools is also important because I don't want to send my kids to private school. Quality of life is very important because I don't want a repeat of being miserable.

Houston is definitely a friendly place, although I have not had any *unfriendly* experiences Chicago, I think Houstonians are extremely friendly. There are plenty of activities for kids and adults. Htx bars do close at 2am, but if you have kids, I'm not sure how late you'll be out.

I've seen a lot of back and forth on COL and I can say that inner loop real estate(or near the loop) can be expensive. Look into the Heights(we love it), Garden Oaks, Meyerland, Bellaire, museum district. Houston isn't the most walkable city and honestly, it gets too hot to be in the blasting sun for a 3mi walk in August, but West University and the Heights are very walkable/bike able. There are trails that connect different neighborhoods and take you through downtown. I do use my car everyday to go to the office, but it's a 15min drive to my office. if I worked downtown, it would be less. Public schools can be decent, but improving - there's a big move to keep the kids in the neighborhood school, but we choose to send our kiddo to private school.

I can probably give you a better perspective in a few years since we'll be moving(short term) to Chicago in May . Good luck on your move.

Given the OP's requirement, I think Houston is a no-brainer here.

I still think it's a matter of what sort of tier the bartender is and how close family and friends are in Michigan to the Chicago border.

There are a lot of factors that can affect a personal decision to move to one or another rather than a general which is better topic. It makes a lot more sense to list out the personal context than to just come in with what one's favorite city is.
