I drive down through South Shore areas a lot and it still opens my eyes just how attractive and great the areas look even though I know they have crime issues. It's not like the hundreds of thousands of people on the south side are ALL going through bullets and dealing with crime ALL the time. It's mostly young men in the evening hours going after each other.

I'm more familiar with the west side as I drive those streets often to avoid I-290, and from my experience the west side, although fairly small in area, is much worse off than the south side as far as entrenched poverty, abandonment and general crime issues.

There is one main pocket around Englewood and Washington Park that looks terrible and has lots of abandonment, but shockingly (based on the stereotypes) MOST of the south side looks in pretty good shape and isn't full of vacant lots. Crime absolutely, but not as much the wholesale Detroit like visuals of decay and abandonment.
This is all very true, but what I don't like is seeing Chicago posters cherry pick the city in order to say "see look, we aren't that bad!" when literally every single city could do the same thing and post similar low crime/homicide statistics.

It is what it is and the numbers don't lie. You may not live close to those gangsters, but they are still in relatively close proximity.

Petersburg is at 6/18.75, having a down year...

Fayetteville is only at 10/4.88, which is also a down year for them. Fayetteville is only on pace for ~16 by year end, which is definitely below average by three to five murders...

Rocky Mount is at 9/16.36, which is well above it's average of ~6-7 murders per year...

The worst large city (over 100,000 city proper) in North Carolina is consistently Durham, which is currently at 22/8.37. Fayetteville normally follows Durham; those two cities are the worst large cities in NC year-in, year-out, and both are having better years than average this year. Durham is on pace for ~35 murders this year...

The worst small cities in NC (under 100,000 city proper) consistently would be Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, Lumberton, Laurinburg, Salisbury, Oxford, a few more. NC small cities and towns are often much more dangerous than the larger cities, which is a contrast to what I found in Northern states and even VA, where for the most part, small cities are safer than the larger ones. The only two real bad small cities in VA is Danville and Petersburg and Portsmouth...

I ran through NC cities back in the day and personally, Goldsboro and Lumberton had the highest "feel" of danger about them. In the larger cities, it seemed like there was always something going on in Charlotte, but that's only because of how big it is. Charlotte and Fayetteville actually felt extremely similar as to how dangerous the cities felt...
