Which city is better for a techie? The Phoenix AZ area or Austin TX area? I'm coming from the silicon valley and used to live in Phoenix. (Politics doesn't matter to me. I get along with everyone and consider myself neutral.)

Austin TX is a tech hotbed right now, probably only behind Silicon Valley, Seattle, and New York. Dell is located in the area. The region is oozing with startups and a has a booming economy. It's a no-brainer.

What type of technology?

Better in terms of job prospects within a specific tech field or just better overall quality of life?

Personally I prefer metro Phoenix.

Thanks. We are a techie couple (SW engineering and program management). Does Austin offer similar salaries to the Bay Area or is it more like Phoenix (very low salaries but low cost of living)?

You'd probably wanna post in the Austin forum to get reliable answers on that. I'm just running off public knowledge and hearsay. Can't say I know anything about wages but Austin's CoL is somewhere between Phoenix and the Bay Area. As far as I know wages are solid.

Austin ranked the best for tech salaries when adjusted for COL among 15 tech hubs surveyed.

Phoenix was not included in the comparison though, I don't think it's really seen as a strong tech hub in the same league as Austin.

Having lived in both cities I'd have to say Austin.
