Love Charleston, but it's San Diego: re amenities, metro population (San Diego 3.2 million vs. Charleston 780,000), education (schools and higher ed), even groceries (food is pretty important, and the quality of food in S. California beats the Deep South -- except for New Orleans). Southern California is just on a higher level. Rents are high in SD, but they are getting to be high on the CHN peninsula and Mt. Pleasant -- or so I've been told ("You'll spend way more money for rent in Charleston than the apartent is worth."

Makes no sense. Are you actually looking in terms of healthfulness, or simply taste?

Definitely both (but OK -- I realize food isn't as important to some people as it is to others.) San Diego is, nationally speaking, a pretty healthful place. Its health/fitness stats (incl. overweight/obesity) are better than those of most southern cities (possible exception: college towns, with their younger population). Life expectancy in urban Calif. is also higher than in urban SC.

Seems as though you're conflating groceries with cuisine, hence your mention of New Orleans. Not sure which you're really getting at.

I really meant both -- cuisine, ordinary groceries, restaurants of every price, quality, choice. (New Orleans excels in all of it.) I think San Diego wins that contest over Charleston. Even if it's a draw, though, SD wins in most every other Q of L comparison.
