26 years old and planning to relocate from Pennsylvania. Looking for a city with a laid back vibe and access to the beach. Between Charleston, SC and San Diego, CA, which location takes the cakes based on the list of desired attributes to follow? I'll leave the weather and COL out of the equation since I am familiar with those differences.
1. Young professional crowd
2. Walkable neighborhoods (ok with driving to & from work but would like to walk/bike otherwise)
3. Parks and/or outdoor recreation (dog friendly)
4. "Well-groomed" (fewer dilapidated areas)
5. Natural beauty (topography, architecture, skyline, walking/running trails, etc.)
San Diego would win for me other than COL which can be crushing unless one has a very well-paying job and not a criteria to be taken lightly. Quality of life means nothing if one can't afford to enjoy it or have to consistently worry about making ends meet. Charleston would probably afford a much more attainable quality of life, and it's geographic proximity allowing for easy travel elsewhere since you'll be able to afford it most likely. San Diego is close to the Mexican border and 2 hours from LA, but otherwise it's going to be pricey airline travel due to the geography of the west....and probably not frequent on the average salary there.
Seems like San Diego is the overwhelming favorite. I've visited once for a day, but will going for an extended weekend soon. Suggestions for neighborhoods/areas to check out as potential places to find an apartment? I'll be looking for a studio or 1 bd up to $1300/mo.
