I have seen different lists regarding the top singles especially in 1995 such as the one from soulsystem.it. I'll give you the top selling but the East still had more depth. Way more in fact in 1994, 1995, and 1996. I'm still not giving the west as a domination in general between 88-96. Especially 88. Ok you have NWA, but what else compared to the East.?
And that's the issue with the genre today. Garbage is subjective but too many people think they have some kind of authority on what is true hip hop.
As far as the subject of the thread, Atlanta today, NYC in the past.
It's for kids, young thug, migos, lil yachty. To me, all these dudes are grade a hot garbage lyrically. They are popular because a, you can party to them, and b, the beat. That's about it. Very little skill tho.

Good point Spade, I'm 31 and I'm from the ATL but this new stuff is so awful. I never thought that I'd be that "I only listen to 90s hip-hop but then again, I never thought that the bar would fall this low. XXL had a " Special Ed" cypher with Lil Yachty, 21 Savage, and other off brand artists. They were off beat and repeated the same words over. Terrible, at least have a good flow. They aren't even trying.
Not to get off topic but what Joe Budden did to the Migos last night was disrespectful.
Up North Artist are definitely envious of the success coming out of Atlanta right now.
Absolutely. Joe Budden was definitely rude, but I'm sure that he's aware of the people who wouldn't take that. I don't think he would've pulled that stunt with Gucci, or T.I. as those two seem to be about that action.
Meek is a clown too, honestly for trying to jump Safaree over a girl that neither one of them are with.

Every rapper that you just named should be on the "Short Bus Shawty Remix. Absolutely no lyrical skills whatsoever.
They been jealous since the early 90s and the rise of Laface. In fact we were just talking about how Jay-Z decided to release his album on the same day that TLC is due to release theirs. Haters will do all they can to stop your shine. It would be hilarious if TLC still debuts at the top. That will be a burn that will NOT heal.

So no to drugs. East Coast was running Urban Contemporary in the eighties AND hip-hop. At the same time.
