Is NYC more like Boston with Dominicanos & Ricans vs Mexicans? Listening to Fox News, I thought the majority of Hispanics everywhere else in the US were mostly Mexican..

Of course. I'm just saying that I don't see what's "unassimilated" about NYC born Hispanics in general.

Puerto Ricans and Dominicans are even more assimilated, so what's your point? Most Puerto Ricans even in Puerto Rico can speak English.

That being said, there are way more Mexicans in NYC than people realize. They will likely surpass Puerto Ricand in number within 20 years, among the younger generation at least.

I haven’t been following this thread wicked closely. Are you saying that knowing English makes them less Hispanic? That’s kinda screwy ain’t it?

Knowing English didn’t make my ancestors less Irish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No but it means they're more assimilated.

But I believe this thread is about US born Latinos, pretty much all of whom are assimilated in 2020.

Different than people born in their parents’ country? Maybe. Assimilated? Nah.

My wife is fairly assimilated, and has my Caucasian last name. People are reportedly surprised when she shows up for appointments that she’s not white (her sister got a genetic test; almost 56% Native American, so dark skin, almond eyes; also about 7% African). But she maintains a lot of her Salvy traditions, from cooking to Spanish to taking care of family and an interesting take on sexuality.

You think ability to speak English has nothing to do with assimilation?

That's the most important part

Is it? Italian-Americans generally learned English en-masse, but all my coworkers are still so quick to tell me about how Italian they are. I got one Polish friend and all she ever posts about on social media is being Polish.

It’d be cool if the Latin American immigrants could keep their kids speaking Spanish, but it’s tough. My wish is that this round of immigrants keeps their language. Indefinitely, ideally. As long as possible, otherwise.

Just because Italian Americans call themselves Italian and some cultural remnants left (like Italian-American cooking) doesn't mean they're not assimilated to white America.

Hispanics either assimilate to black American culture or white American culture for the most part

For sure. they originated that tbh.

Most of the demographic of NYCs black and Latino community is very similar to Boston. We followed their lead.
