"Chicago cannot compete with Los Angeles for absolutely spectacular scenery."
All I have to say is...
AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Drive down Lake shore drive and say that with a straight face, I dare you. If you can, you shoudl be in the white house.
thats laughable, when most people in just california think all of illinois is flyover country
That says more about the rampant architectural/artistic failings of the educational system in California than Chicago's architectural merit. I work with architects on a daily basis and am fairly aware of the architectural scene, and while LA certainly has made some contributions to architecture as a whole (e.g. Gehry's fabulous Walt Disney Concert Hall, the myriad of fascinating modern homes built for the wealthy), they are not to the level of Chicago. Chicago is certainly not the best architectural city out there, but it is much more well respected in architectural circles than LA is.
I've not been to LA (I have nothing against the city whatsoever, I just simply have not visited yet as most of my travels in the US take me to the east-coast), but one of my very good friends, born and raised in New Jersey, has, and she has chosen to make a home there after living in Chicago with me for a few years, and she has never once raved about LA's architecture, but spoke highly of Chicago's. Additionally, I had some family in town just recently from the Boston area (I have lots of family from New England, and they love to visit me here in Chicago, and I spend plenty of time out there), and I heard nothing but their raves of our downtown area. So while perhaps the Angelenos you hang out with certainly do dismiss anything east of California as 'flyover country', it speaks more of their ignorance than of any sort of reality.

The fact that folks in California (according to you) are ignorant of Chicago's place in the world of big city architecture doesn't change the fact that Chicago has played a historical role in influencing the architecture of big cities across the globe. Google "Chicago architecture" and rethink your position.
Any negative connotation folks in "flyover country" have of LA is reinforced by your style of posting.

I do though look forward to him answering my question about ever being in the Midwest during the winter.
Yes. I was born and raised in Chicago and I still own property in the heart of the city.
