We'll have to see what BB&T/SunTrust has up their sleeve. Right now that would be the best bet for a new tallest. Even if not, Charlotte's skyline is bulking up rather impressively. I didn't think the city would witness another boom like this post-recession but it exceeds the pre-recession boom.
I didn't doubt that it would continue to grow. Like you, I am impressed with the post-recession boom Charlotte is experiencing. Charlotte invested in the right industries early on to sustain it's economy. Here is a great article with added context from people on the ground.
Correct. There are no towers planned to be over 900 ft. In Charlotte. Just several in the mid 600’s is about the tallest that’s recently been built or still U/C.
As Mutiny said, the most likely tower to be around 1000ft would be the new HQ of Suntrust/BB&T. One which has an HQ in Winston-Salem, NC and the other in Atlanta. So they could potentially need a lot of space for a new HQ (and the Technology division) versus companies that already had a major presence

Something tells me IF BB&T/SunTrust were to build a new tallest, it would just edge out BOA Corporate Center, which is 871 ft tall, by a couple feet, like no more than 50 ft. They could even go the petty route and build an 875 ft tower lol.
one thing I salute Charlotte on is even though they do have some height what I really like is this put up mostly buildings with a sense of style that boa building to this day is a classic beauty.

That building is among the best anywhere. I don't think anything should be taller than it. It would look awkward at least for the foreseeable future.
For what it is worth Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte are about equal for recognition countrywide. Just for totally different reasons.

Kinda like Austin with all those residential towers dwarfing the Frost Bank tower. But at least in Charlotte's case, it would most likely be another office tower that would top BOA Corporate Center. It and Duke Energy Center, the 2nd tallest, make for great peaks for the skyline right now.
Duke and UNC are two of the top universities in the world (#18 and #56 according to Times Higher Education, State is in the top 300). Cities can flourish without universities obviously, but they can add fuel to the fire when leveraged properly. I think it’s safe to say the Triangle made good choices 60 years ago. Incidentally the RTP is the largest research park in North America.
As far as tech workers, it’s now a huge field so there is not necessarily a competitive overlap between Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte. It’s big enough for everyone to enjoy. And looking at things, it looks like both Charlotte and the Triangle are reaping the benefits of smart decisions made in decades past.
Unless one has a connection, or it's work related, I never hear anyone speak of either. I don't know anyone who has gone there to live, but I did have friends in Chicago, who came from Raleigh.
