Wisconsin taxes are not much better than Illinois.

Nothing wrong with IN except for the northern industrial parts of Lake County. Most everything south of 80/94 is quite desirable. Though it is not cosmopolitan, it is suburbia with all the amenities and easy access to the rest of the metro area and the big city and a light rail system is coming soon. Munster, St. John, Crown Point, Chesterton and Valparaiso are some of the nicer areas. The Indiana Dunes which is now a national park is a very nice area in the summer to visit. This is all assuming you want to stick closer to the metro area as there are also nice areas further out.

I know some people get a feel for the area by driving on the Borman Expressway 80/94 with the big billboard signs etc and heavy truck traffic or by exiting briefly for a gas stop. That won't cut it.

I'd take Milwaukee over Indianapolis any day--Badger over Hoosier...

I just drove from Milwaukee to Chicago this week-end, stopping in Pleasant Prairie along the way. I know numerous people from Chicago who have moved there, and love it. They didn't want to be anywhere near Gary, and said WI was the better option for them.

Wisconsin is more West, in my opinion, Indiana is more Midwest.

FWIW, both Indiana and Wisconsin are part of the East North Central region as defined by the United States Census Bureau

True.

But I'm thinking culturally.

Not sure what's "West" about Wisconsin...especially the area someone would move to, to be close to Illinois. Kind of weird to think of WI as western.

Indiana IMO feels more southern than anything else, even as far north as Fort Wayne. Wisconsin feels solidly Midwest. Culver's, originating from Wisconsin, is a Midwest staple.

I mean in the late 1800's it was considered "west", but not in 2019.

I assume most people know Northwestern University (in Evanston, IL) was given it's name because at one point, it was near the northwesternmost point of the U.S.
