Just got back from another trip to IL. Put an offer in on a home. After inspection report came back, the house was a mess. We're deciding to pursue either IN or WI now for lower taxes and slightly cheaper homes. We have family in IL and would like to be close to either border for doctors/family and possibly jobs. Need really great high school for my niece.
What are the biggest differences between the two states? Which one would you pick?

Property taxes are less in Indiana, but overall Wisconsin has a nicer feel. Also check the regional hospital ratings in NW Indiana, some are rated not so good.
Wisconsin is a great state, and Lake Michigan is its entire eastern border. A lot of people are moving to the Pleasant Prairie area, just north of the WI/IL border. In, literally, a few minutes, you're in Illinois. Also, Pleasant Prairie and Kenosha are part of the Chicago MSA, and are on Lake Michigan.
If you are looking to live close to Chicago, you should probably go with northwest Indiana. Northwest Indiana is part of Chicagoland. Indiana and Illinois are mirror images of each other except politically.
While Wisconsin is more alike to Chicago (well, at least southeast Wisconsin), Indiana is way cheaper. Wisconsin is quickly becoming expensive, especially in Madison. Even though many might frown on it, I still think Northwest Indiana is one of the most underrated places in this entire region. It's right there next to Chicago, but you save so much on almost everything. Not to mention, you don't need to sneak fireworks over the state line into Illinois.
