No competition. Asheville wins.

Culturally, I find neither to be overly appealing though I can tolerate the west much easier than the southeast.
Provo also has scenery and weather much more to my liking. I don’t do the humid east unless Canada is a few-hours drive away.
Provo, with Salt Lake City and all that nearby, would have much more in the way of economic opportunities.

I disagree on Provo having much more economic opportunities. Charlotte trumps Salt Lake City in many categories and Greenville is close enough to provide even more economic opportunities.

Hardly a comparison.
Provo might as well the same metro as SLC. Pretty much fully connected with a commuter train to boot.
45 miles versus 125 in the case of Charlotte.
Then there’s Asheville’s drive to Greenville. While the distance is shorter at 63 miles, it’s still Greenville, hardly on par with SLC.

I agree with this. SLC and Provo are part of the same CSA. They may not be part of the same MSA but the cities of the Wasatch Front are one big, interconnected blob.

Back to the original post, I would prefer Provo over Asheville. I prefer the more dramatic mountain setting of Utah Valley. I understand the economy to be stronger, even without the very close ties to SLC. That's two out of the three so Provo is my choice.
