Agree. people sell the Lou short. STL is a great town. People are fooled by Indy's convention friendly Vegas style downtown. Outside downtown the city is a shell for miles in all directions. That said, the city has expanded in the last 5 years to gentrify about 2.5 miles in each direction from Monument Circle.
That cannot beat a multimodal, historic city like STL. The CWE and Clayton in particular crush Indy.
Yeah, both cities have seen heavy disinvestment and urban "renewal" devastation of their built environments since the 1950s. I would say that St Louis has more 'vibrant' areas, but the 'bad' areas are basically like Mordor. North and East St Louis look like barren Mogadishus, and they're probably just as dangerous. (I know east STL technically isn't part of the city, but it's so close it might as well be another neighborhood).
There is talk of St. Louis doing the exact same. They had it on a ballot last year and I think it got approval for further consideration in late 2020, before a final vote is passed in 2021. If the city-county consolidation goes into effect, St. Louis will have close to 2 million people and it’s cohesiveness will definitely improve. That might bring a whole host of other issues to remain to be seen, like class distinction, taxes, and county vs city services.
If they did, they'd be the first city to pull it off in a long time. I wish my Cincy could do something similar.

Uhh Lets see St Louis tried to Re-Join the County in the 1920's 1950's 1960's 1980's and gave up in 2019 when the Better together Campaign Called it Quits...St Louis City County Consolidation/ Merger...Not Happening

I disagree. As the county continues to lose residents to St. Chuck, Jeff Co and Frank Co, consolidation with the city will become more appetizing. Despite its issues, the City is getting richer. Barnes is exploding and Cortex is off to the races. The NGA expansion is huge and is currently/will continue to drive investment in geospatial tech that the City, not the county, is moving to capitalize on.
Not to mention that COVID-19 is exposing the insolvency of many St. Louis county municipalities which is going to lead to intracounty municipal consolidations and/or a greater burden of services on the county directly. Either scenario exacts pressure on the county and city to consolidate.

Both are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the best cities in the Midwest, but Saint Louis has some pretty areas at least [those that weren't bulldozed due to urban renewal] so it gets my vote.
Things to do in St. Louis:
1. Nice and Free Zoo?
2. The Arch. I went up in it when I was a kid. One time is enough.
3. A Cardinals game? I won't even go there.
Face it: St. Louis is a boring city.
BTW, St. Louis has nothing to say about the crime rate in Indianapolis.

Ha, see that's what I mean and was trying to say in the other thread St Louis lacks the energy and vibrancy of other cities, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a boring city though, you have to venture out of Downtown and Know where to go.
Indianapolis has the better downtown. St. Louis everything else with safety being a tie.
Pretty much this for me as well.
