Asheville, hands down. I'm sure Spokane is nice, but Asheville is fabulous. No comparison, imo.

It’s close for me. I think I would enjoy the culture in Asheville more, but the outdoors in Spokane might be slightly better for my tastes, just because the Cascades are way prettier than the Appalachians in my book.

However, I think I would still go with Asheville by a hair.

Asheville is one of my favorite places and I've seen very few comparably sized American cities that have such an eclectic mix of culture and scenery. It's unique as an urban center in the eastern US at over 2000 ft elevation and is constantly evolving.

I have not visited Spokane, but living at such a far northern latitude does not appeal with the short winter daylight hours, and it is rather isolated. Forest fires have also been an issue in that part of the West in recent years.

But isn't Spokane way East of the Cascades? There are wheat fields not far from there. I've never been to Eastern Washington, but have heard this and I've seen tons of pics.

Its basically barren, mountainous or hilly in many areas, and mostly a cold desert

This is basically what Eastern WA looks like. I took these while driving there for the first time.

I really think the OP meant Olympia and confused the towns. I dont see Spokane being able to stand to Asheville.

Thanks for the pics! This pretty much confirms it for me. The Cascades are nowhere near here.

Those are pictures of the Palouse. Spokane is on the edge of the Palouse but isn't actually in it. Spokane has some mountains around it and has some forest and trees. Doesn't look anything like those pictures.

Thirty or so miles south of Spokane it looks like the pictures you posted.

30 miles north of Spokane it looks like this.

And Spokane itself looks more like this than it does the Palouse.

Duncan Garden in South Hill neighborhood. Spokane, WA

Spokane itself is like Boise or Denver...the old parts of town are full of trees.

This is particularly true in the south 1/3 of town, which is walking distance from the CBD. https://www.google.com/maps/@47.6511.../data=!3m1!1e3

Pan back and you can see forest within a bike ride of the CBD. https://www.google.com/maps/@47.6961.../data=!3m1!1e3

There's a lot of scrubby foresty area in the suburbs. https://www.google.com/maps/@47.6899.../data=!3m1!1e3

I'd still say it would be hard to compete with Asheville. Western Washington is much better suited for that.

For outdoors activities both are nice, but Spokane is in a general better location.

But comparing the towns themselves, while I find Spokane livable, Asheville is fantastic with loads of charm, and is maybe better compared to somewhere like Bend, OR.
