Tennessee doesn't have a state income tax on salaries or wages.

Some people see that as a plus but the state gets its revenue in other ways so it evens out IMO.

Oh, wow! My bad, sorry to you both. I know they do some weird tax on investments and have high sales taxes, but I could have sworn they also had income tax. Oops!

Oh no biggie. Yeah I see they tax stock dividends but in 2021 that is supposed to be eliminated also. At that point TN will be income tax-free across the board it seems: https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/...g-2021/487137/

I’m trying to figure out which is the best city to make that move for next year. Here are the categories that I need to know:

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advance ~
Cost of living - Tampa or Charlotte. Charlotte doesn't have the cost of being on the coast, but Tampa has cheaper goods and I think rent is slightly cheaper. Good housing can be found in both.

State income tax - Tampa, Florida has no income tax. I think Tennessee is abolishing/has abolished theirs, but the sales tax is sky high.

Crime rate - Tampa is clearly the winner here, there is no "about the same." Tampa is considered one of the safest big cities in the US. Florida Heat doesn't use Google.

Diversity - Tampa or Atlanta. Tampa isn't really "dominated" by anyone, while Atlanta has a large Asian population for the south and has a good minority mix.

Just on that criteria, and the fact that you want to be closer to people in Florida:

1. Tampa

2. Atlanta
3. Charlotte

4. Nashville

As usual, it depends on preferences. I don't see a huge difference, but there are variances to housing cost and commutes etc.

It's been six weeks. Have you chosen?
