As a Cincinnative (I made that term up), but current New Yorker, I can attest to Cleveland having more name recognition in NYC than anywhere else in Ohio by a large margin.
Honestly as a Clevelander the lopsided-ness of this poll kind of surprised me. I think people from Cleveland tend to identify as Clevelanders first and Ohioans second.
That's true, I think a lot of Clevelanders don't think of themselves as being representative of the rest of Ohio. Lots of jokes about Columbus being a cow-town and the rest of the state being Amish and mountain folk in the south.
However I think it's the most well-known and has the highest profile (for better or worse sometimes) outside of the state.
I wonder if Ohio will also see an extremely different distribution if done on Reddit. But i think it wouldn’t be as bit of a difference as Texas, but would be worth while.
Being the biggest city doesn’t necessarily make it the most Ohioan. When people from outside the region think of Ohio, they probably don’t envision highly urbanized cities with coasts and hills like CIN and CLE. They think “Midwest, flat.” It wouldn’t be Columbus though because someone outside the region has probably never heard of it. This is a tough one....we know what the most famous cities are but are they really associated with Ohio?
True. I don't understand why some people (mainly East Coasters) view Ohio as this flat flyover state where no one lives. It's been one of the most populated states in the nation for over 150 years...
Sadly, Cleveland's economy isn't as strong as Columbus or Cincinnati, but I'd argue that Cleveland has the richest history and culture in the state. From a pop culture standpoint, Cleveland is known for LeBron James/Cleveland Cavaliers, The Drew Carey Show, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well.
Columbus is a discoverer
Cincinnati is a radio station
Cleveland is Ohio.
I think that's how most Americans and Canadians see Ohio in a nutshell.
