Decided to make a poll for this that wasn't a monolith. We all know Michigan is overwhelmingly associated with Detroit. After Detroit what city do you consider most associated with Michigan?

Flint, barely? Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids are also candidates. This is a tough call and I'll be interested to see the poll results after some time has elapsed.

Sadly due to media, Flint came to mind first and not for good reasons.

Here on C-D, probably Grand Rapids. Never thought much about it before C-D, but it comes up in discussion frequently for mid sized metros.

I've never been to Michigan, but if I did go I'd most interested in seeing the Traverse City area and the lake shore in the northern part of the state.

I agree that Flint may be the most notable. Not sure even on C-D that Grand Rapids would win out. It's regularly forgotten in polls with peers on here, even with it's rising profile.

Ann Arbor. High up on the best small cities lists, Univ of Michigan, huge college sports tradition.

Tough one. After Detroit, if you are talking about the general public (non-Michiganders), then I'm guessing it would be Ann Arbor. But if you ask Michiganders, which city is most associated with the state besides Detroit, it would probably be Flint or Grand Rapids (or even Lansing), depending on who you ask.

Grand Rapids may be the most under the radar city of it's size. It's nearly 3x the size of Ann Arbor's metro and about the same for Flint. Even as the fastest emerging city in Michigan most people on here have barely heard of it, and due to it's location even fewer have been there. So many people think it's another 50-80k city and don't give it another thought. There were so many people who couldn't believe how big/vibrant it was when they first visited during my time there. It doesn't get the notoriety of Flint, or brand recognition of Ann Arbor. Though it's been steadily widening the gap between it and the other Michigan mid-sized cities for the last 50+ years.

I'd be curious some day to know how many people here have actually been there vs. how many have only heard mention of it and confuse it with Grand Forks or something.
