Yeah, Lake Mead is nice to have nearby. It's a similar story in Phoenix with Lakes Pleasant, Saguaro, Bartlett are all nearby (30-60 minutes) depending on what side of the valley you live in. Roosevelt, Canyon, Apache, and Horseshoe lakes are a bit further out (1-1.5 hours) but also fairly close. A lot of local kayakers and SUPers hit the Lower Salt River, by Mesa on the east side of town. Or Tempe Town Lake which is right in the middle of the city.
Rocky Point is great for smooth water sports, relaxing and having drinks, as well as for fishing. One of the best parts of Rocky Point is the fishing variety including Sea Bass, Mackerel, Red Snapper, Grouper, Flounder, and White Fish. The thing I like about RP versus SoCal is also the relaxation, you're in a small town on a beach, you're not driving into and out of a massive metroplex. It's a totally different experience then going to Long Beach.
Besides that San Diego is basically the same distance from Vegas as Phoenix, 5 hours basically either way. Huntington is about 5.5 versus 4.5 from Vegas.
Clark County has 7 times the water area of Maricopa - 169 square miles versus 24. water access is not even close.

I already said having Lake Mead nearby is nice... My point is there is no issues finding quality, large enough lakes near Phoenix as well. And three of the lakes I mentioned aren't in Maricopa County, which are the biggest but I don't care if I have 169 or 50 square miles of water, as long as I have some decent options I'm good.
I don't mind an afternoon on Saguaro or Canyon Lake, any day.

And if you are happy with your bath tub or swimming pool it is not an issue for you.
Just pointing out that in terms of heavy boating Maricopa is not there. Neither place is up to S. CA but Vegas comes a lot closer. It is a distinct advantage over Phoenix.
Well, if you're not buying a home, why not just live where you want for now? It's actually a shorter drive to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix than Las Vegas. And if you like hot weather, we've got it (here in Phoenix)!
Sounds like you are speculating on some high future income that may or may not materialize.
Okay thank you.I stand corrected on the distance from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon.

If someone is that into "heavy boating" they're not looking to live in Vegas or Phoenix.
I'd pick Las Vegas if it was LV vs Phoenix because it gets less 110+ heat than Phoenix but Arizona has Flagstaff and other communities in the mountains with nice weather year round and low crime so Arizona wins. Why live in the scorching desert if you can help it though.

Sorry. Next door neighbor has a 38 footer. Friend who moved to Boulder City from S. CA so he could continue to boat brought along his 30 footer which is now docked on Lake Mead.
I would agree 60 footers are almost unheard of. But normal S. CA boats are common.

Doesn’t Phoenix have a higher crime rate than Vegas? Or is that just Tucson?

While we are talking about non winter climates those places are not relevant. And you can move to the snowing mountains if you wish around 40 minutes outside of Las Vegas.
And I personally will not get near anywhere that it really snows...I am not afraid of it as I lived over a decade in Rochester NY where snow is an everyday event. But at this point I do not wish to deal with ice or snow. In my present state that is life threatening.
