In terms of national recognition and importance, which of these southern metros takes the cake? In terms of history, popularity, growth, pop culture, sports, etc.
For example, if you talk to someone anywhere in the United States, which metro out of these options would that person most-likely recognize and know about? (I'm excluding larger cities such as Atlanta, Nashville, Houston, etc.)
Louisville- Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Bourbon,
Richmond- Civil War history, capital city
Raleigh/Durham- Research, college basketball, capital city, Andy Griffith show references
Charleston- English colony, US and Civil War history, tourism,
Birmingham- Civil Rights history, "Pittsburgh" of the south
Memphis- Elvis, Blues, BBQ, basketball, MLK assassination
I voted Raleigh/Durham. I'm a huge college basketball fan which is not common in New England outside of Connecticut
