Criteria

Cost of Living: Hartford
Quality of Life: Tie
Proximity to Parks/Recreation: Springfield
Crime: Springfield, barely...
Better Downtown: Hartford
Better Future: Hartford
Better Investment to buy: Tie
Tax Burden: Springfield
Suburbs/Surrounding Towns: Hartford
Transit (trains): Hartford
Food: Hartford
Urban Blight: Springfield
Liveliness/Fun Aspect: Hartford

Overall: Hartford. More of a professional scene, more wealthy an diverse metro, much better and more interesting lofts/apartment, more to do, actually a suuuper walkable city, closer to NYC maybe only 5-10 minutes further from Boston? More new developments that are actually beneficial not one casino .

And I cannot overstate the MASSIVE field of difference in competence and compassion that separates Mayor Luke Bronin From Mayor Domenic Sarno. Sarno is absolute trash compare to Bronin

Are you actually considering these cities? You just moved no?

Hartford. No need to live in Springfield when Hartford's only a 30 min drive away. Both sleepy but at least Hartford is bigger with way more amenities and way nicer surrounding areas.

On a side note I had to go to Springfield for a work convention at the Mass Mutual Center back in late 2019. A very small city that has some interesting old architecture and a few old neighborhoods setup on these hills. I like the city layout. With that said, besides the Dr. Seuss memorial, Mass Mutual Center, the Casino and the Basketball Hall of Fame, it's about as dead and hollowed out as can be. Definitely old, run down and a good amount of drug addicts/homeless walking around. Good for a day trip but that's about it.

The neighborhoods that look nice and classic in Springfield are some of the worst, sociologically. Unfortunately the more stable neighborhoods are further out and dominated by plain mid century suburban ranches and split levels. It’s a sorry city for 155k people.

The Pioneer Valley is way nicer than Central Connecticut, imo.

Maybe I just haven’t explored the latter enough?

Yea...you might be alone on that

You need to explore more. It’s not particularly close. Maybe Hampshire County if you like the rustic, quaint, hippie feel but sure as hell not Hampden County. Over Hartford County? Naw

Hartford has elite suburbs in multiple directions. Springfield has ....Longmeadow population 15k

I'm not familiar with the areas at all directly surrounding Springfield so you're probably right. Whereas Hartford I know better and has some really nice suburbs.

Yes, the nicer parts of the Springfield MSA are definitely north of Holyoke.

Which I don’t even consider Springfield MSA. Ik it is but, no, that’s Amherst/Northampton land-a very different vibe from Hanoden/ Springfield and not a short commute. Where as Hartford has nice suburbs that directly abut it in 3 direction (N W S)

OP could live in Suffield or Enfield and split the difference between the two cities.
