The statement was totally off and stereotypical...In 2010, 75% of GA lived in urban areas compared to 87% in Maryland. I am willing to bet that GA is fairly close to 80% now. Also, several blacks in rural GA own farmland and things of that nature, so living in "rural" areas do not necessarily equate to lesser/poorer opportunities.
Great point and even in NY, you can find black farmers. https://www.blackfarmersunited.org/ (I believe at least a couple are missing as well from the map)
Potential to get into the winery game, like this example: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bla...nessmonth/amp/ are great as well. I say that given that Long Island, the Finger Lakes, along the 2 Great Lakes and Lake Champlain are regions in the state with that industry.

I would say cities like Portland or Seattle would be the best places to make it as a black entrepreneur.
There's so much white guilt in these cities from a lack of diversity that people will bend over backwards for minorities just to pat themselves on the back. It's not like that in Houston or Atlanta. Nobody is going to eat at your restaurant in Atlanta just because your black, especially other black folks.
Keep in mind that this is about states, not cities.
Seattle and Portland have almost the entire populations of their states. Rural areas in almost any state aren't where a black entrepreneur would go to be successful. BIG difference between starting a business in Houston vs some tiny town in the pan handle.
No...OR and WA aren't even in the list.
Also, as mentioned, living in a rural area in some states doesn't necessarily mean less opportunity or the opportunities are just different.
I feel like the entire West Coast would be an easier go as a black business owner. The Pacific Northwest in general is absolutely loaded with white liberals that would not only welcome black owned businesses but would shove them down your throat if given the opportunity.
My Brother in law, who's a black professional from Virginia that now lives in Portland says he's never had his butt kissed so much in his life. He admits that it's super cringe, but it's nice compared to what he dealt with growing up in Virginia.
Something like a black owned food truck or a retail store would kill it around here. These people are desperate for diversity, particularly black diversity.
Well, it would start with not gentrifying neighborhoods like NE Portland and the Central District in Seattle, which has been the case.
Just curious, but what is the first part of this post referring to?
"Which *state* would you argue has the best landscape for black upper class?
-Number, size and influence of black owned business in state
-strength and acknowledgement of network
-environment conducive to new black businesss
-openness and giving spirit of black wealthy individuals/families in the state
- promotion of black intellectualism and innovation"
The first part is what state has the best landscape which im elaborating on. The part in bold is what everybody is elaborating on. There's business here where the only other location is Atlanta so what are we saying? People talking about Portland bc their brother gets their ass kissed bc they arent used to black people? Whats that go to do with the post either? Im just saying a state with the 2 metros with one of the if not highest AA earning family incomes would be a good landscape for a black millionaire.

Ok…There is information earlier in the thread about high income, predominantly black communities between these states. Most were in MD, with NY also having multiple places with 6 figure median household incomes.
"While several of the metro areas have relatively large contiguous areas with middle-to-high median household incomes and Black-majority populations, the band that stretches through Prince George’s County into Charles County is particularly large and contiguous"
"While majority Black, median-income Census tracts are relatively rare, high-income ones are much more so. There are only 49 such tracts in the US, and 36 of them are found in the Washington area (29 in Prince George’s County alone). Six are found in the New York metro area, two each are found in the Philadelphia and Baltimore metro areas, and the Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit metro areas each have one."
Thanks CKHthankgod-This is all I was trying to say about MD same for Atlanta. Contiguous areas of wealth not pockets like most cities
