You can get slices that feel as urban as NYC, but then just a mile away it drops down drastically. And so on.

Chicago is barely matching one borough of NYC.

Chicago is big, but it's not a mega-city

This might have been true a few years ago. But based on the news coming out of NYC since the COVID era, however, there has been a city-wide crimewave in NYC (especially in ritzy Manhattan) that seem to be contrary to this. Recently a vagrant even pushed a woman (who happened to be of Asian descent) into the subway tracks. Sadly, she ended up being struck by a train and ended up passing away. The crime issue seems to be pressing in both cities at the moment.

This particular tragedy was a mentally ill, homeless man, who was targeting someone to push in front of the train.

Subway track deaths in NYC have been historically a relatively routine thing, unfortunately.

^There were 23 killed through May of last year in 2021--either struck by trains, or falling on the tracks, suicides, etc.

Not to minimize the tragic death of the lady who lost her life most recently, and it is devastating, but subway track deaths happen here annually, unfortunately.

Actually mega-cities are urban areas of 10+ million, so Chicago is on the heels of mega-city status.

Chicago has accidents with the EL as well. These don't seem to be people on the tracks though.

https://www.chicago-l.org/mishaps/misc2.html

This one from 2019 has people walking on the tracks.

https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2019/10...ple-on-tracks/

Data shows CTA collisions specifically involving trains and people – and excluding suicides – have steadily risen over the past 10 years.

There were only four CTA trains collisions with people, eight in 2014, and 11 in 2016, but 18 in 2017 and 19 in 2018. The figure for 2019 is 14, but that is only for half the year.

The crime in NYC has made headlines, but it is nowhere near Chicago’s. Just look up Chicago’s 2021 violent crime and murders. And NYC has almost 4 times the population of Chicago.

More like 3 times.

Both cities are famous for their pizza, sports teams, and architecture, but NYC is more cosmopolitan, diverse, and spread out than Chicago also both cities from the 1970s to mid to late 90s were synonymous with crime, urban blight, and high numbers of homicides as well and both downtowns are the most famous in America.
Chicago over London & Los Angeles?...even Toronto? Uh...really?

Chicago is still synonymous with crime, urban blight, and high numbers of homicides from the '60s-2022..and counting

It’s definitely below London and LA in terms of being a global city. Although I wouldn’t say Chicago is “still synonymous” with urban blight.

Chicago is known for its great architecture and clean downtown, so no, I wouldn’t throw in “urban blight.”

Now crime is definitely something it’s infamous for. Although I wouldn’t say it’s “still synonymous” with it. Obviously Chicago has a history of crime dating back to the Al Capone days, but in the 90’s, NYC (crack cocaine) and LA (gang land) were more infamous in terms of crime. Chicago was bad, but didn’t get the kind of press those cities got. It’s relatively recent (about the last decade around 2012) where Chicago has become the poster child of crime in the modern times. Before that, Detroit was the poster child.

Everyone knows that Chicago was a much more global city in terms of stature in the 90’s. It’s only recently in the last decade, where it’s crime reputation has preceded its other global traits.

I think Chicago is more of a global city now than ever before, crime and what’s going on there right now can be changed for the better and the “crime” stigma would be less. The only caveat is that back in the 80’s and 90’s there was less competition, more cities are vying to be “global” now than ever before.
