Two river cities with similar MSA size, both have more than doubled city population since 1980.

Stockton, CA:

Population: 320,804 (MSA 726,126)

Metro GDP: 32.5 Billion USD

Boise, ID:

Population: 235, 684 (MSA 749,202)

Metro GDP: 38 Billion USD

Though, as mentioned, both cities are experiencing exponential growth, only one seems to receive media coverage for this.

Which do you think will continue to grow as a city and metro area? Why?

Stockton is a f*cking dump, Boise all the way. Stockton is where all the bay area rejects go whose been priced out and the homeless.

Stockton is one of the the many inland dumps of California. Stockton, Fresno, Victorville, Bakersfield, etc. Nobody purposely moves to these cities, they got priced out of LA/SF/SD.

Boise is an up and coming city and a C-D darlling. Stockton is considered one of the arm pit cities of California. While it's population is growing, no one accuses Stockton of prospering, so whether it would "continue" to prosper is kind of premature. It has population growth despite high unemployment.

Boise is a current "it" city and a state capital while Stocton is sort of a back water town in California, not considered a major city. Its population growth is due to working class people moving there because they can't afford to live in the Bay Area. I might be wrong about this, but I think it's also the largest California metro without a public university. It is one of the least educated metros.

They were trying for a Cal State, not sure where they are with it.

Interesting that Stockton, with Amtrak service, a better climate, location at I-5, and a Port that is a legitimate international trade zone could get dismissed so easily while Boise could be touted as a destination.

Boise for sure. Just wondering, isn't Stockton now considered part of the SF/Oakland/ SJ CSA?

Speaking of the Bay Area, if I live in Stockton I can drive to SF in about an hour, Sac in 45 minutes, Yosemite in 90 minutes.

Boise isn't that large of a city, one might get a little bored of things.

Where do I go if I get bored in Boise? Five hours to SLC? Eight hours to Portland?

Yes, the census bureau has added it to the CSA, but people don't think of Stockton as being in the Bay Area. Close to it, but not part of it.

.
So what exactly is the demographic of those who move to Boise?

People who were just totally killing it in San Jose/San Francisco and said, "I need more than this, it's time for an upgrade....I'm moving to Boise."

??

Don’t see the appeal of either what so ever but I’d rather visit and live in Boise. Can’t possibly think of a reason to live in Stockton.
