I would say Washington DC and its entire DMV metropolis. Not saying it is southern or northern, just saying that is straddles that line between the two.

You see north of there is without question Northern and south of there is without question Southern. Doesn't get more "gateway" than that LOL.

I feel that the Atlanta area feels mostly southern with strong northern influences. Yes, we have many transplants (some of our northern suburbs like East Cobb/ North Fulton/ Northwestern Dekalb) may be more akin to New Jersey, but you can find "hole in the wall' southern eateries everywhere from the shadows of Downtown office towers to the most affluent "Yankeefied" suburbs and EVERYWHERE serves sweet tea.

North of the DMV metropolis is the Baltimore metropolis, which is southern. So DC isn't even that first metro when you enter the south.

It's an opinion and highly debatable.

So was the post that spurred his response. The North/South division is hardly a stark line in the sand.

Born in DC. I do not identify as southern and I would say not enough of my peers did either when I lived there, so I would not consider it the gateway to the South and generally prefer that it not be lumped with the South.
