What states do you consider to be the most backwards? Backwards as in behind the times, shut off from the rest of the world, and stepped in tradition...What states do you consider the most progressive? Progressive as in ahead of our time, new technology, retail, reasturants, etc. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I think Florida is backwards in many ways. For instant, the public transportation system and education.

My parents can agree about Florida being behind the times. My mom especially thinks that way.

NY is probably most progressive.

IMO, Massachusetts is by far the most progressive state in the country.

I'd say that California, is just as, if not more "progressive", than NY is. Especailly if we're talking about an 'entire state', as opposed to one city, like NYC.

I say NY because the newest technology starts here (I know this for a fact since my dad works in IT), restaurants, chains, etc. Everything seems to happen in NY and LA before it happens elsewhere.

I have to disagree with the "technology starting in NY". After all, Silcon Valley is in California. Not to mention that Microsoft is on the West coast also. Besides computer technology, look at the aerospace in Cali, along with Boeing being headquarters in Seattle (now Chicago).

California leads the way in alot of "progressive" thinking. I would say that San Fransico has been a pioneer in alot of "progressive" things also. Look how long it took the state of NY to ban smoking compared to Cali. Gay rights I would say started there in Cali. If you take NYC out of the picture, NY as a whole, is far less "progressive" than California.

Backwards-Maybe Alaska but not in a bad way.
Progressive-California is far in the lead with that category.

I would say California is the most progressive. Backwards or set in time, I'd say New Hampshire and parts of Maine, but that's not exactly a bad thing. Lot's of quaint towns without the box stores and fast food joints on every corner, that's what I would call an advantage. I'll take an old fashioned mom and pop diner over some trendy cafe any day.

I have to agree, I was just being kind to NY. Besides NYC, the state of NY can't compare with California as being "progressive", it's not even close.
