I agree and I also voted both because both are fantastic. Northern California has the edge for beautiful natural scenery while Southern California has the edge for the man made environment and buildings alongside scenery. Still both areas have alot of scenery and beautiful buildings - for instance the Golden Gate Bridge is Northern California.

Central California alone has the Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Plus the coast of San Luis Obispo. California pretty much blows the other states away in most categories!

Which part of the state has rights to Big Sur? That is my favorite part of the state, but it is at the boundry of NorCal and SoCal.

I would say NorCal..it is far more Northern Californian than Southern Californian and more accessible from say the Bay Area than SoCal and Monterey and Carmel are often considered NorCal cities.

I alaways thought of it as Central California but on the map shown it is Northern California. Great country and Monterey and Monterey Bay are not too far to the north either.

big sur/monterey county is part of central california. i've met a few northern californians who claim monterey county as part of norcal, but in actuality, central california is a distinct region with its own culture and history. you really cannot compare it with anything in the bay area or other parts of northern california. and it's certainly very different from southern california.

if there were an option for "central california" in this poll, i would've voted for that, just b/c of the big sur coastline. in a state that's filled with natural beauty, big sur might be the most stunning feature of them all.

interesting how this map claims big sur/monterey county for norcal while designating only san luis obispo county for the central coast.

i realize that determining the exact boundaries of california's regions is a subjective process, but IMO the norcal/central coast boundary is way off. and to be fair, northern santa barbara county can be grouped together with central california as well (and it often is).

Actually no.

This is Southern California as far as statistical and geo-political purposes within CA are concerned. I would throw in Inyo County.

I usually go by wikipedia's definition of Northern vs. Southern:
(Note: This basically includes Central CA as a part of Northern CA)

Northern:

Southern:

This puts the majority of the population in Southern California, but the majority of the land in Northern California. Going by this method, I think Northern CA wins the scenery contest hands down.

Redwoods:

Yosemite:

Whitney:

Death Valley:

Lake Tahoe:

Mt. Shasta:

Big Sur:

Point Reyes:

The Lost Coast:

Trinity Alps:

Sutter Buttes:

Burney:

Mammoth:

Lassen (erupting):
