What is the best city in the New York Metropolitan area, excluding the City itself? I personally would go for Jersey City, New Jersey.

I will have to go with Freehold NJ or Colts Neck NJ.

Both are located in Monmouth County

It is kind of far away from NYC (35 minutes), but it is wrapped into the nyc metro in the MSA and CSA

At some point in my lifetime I'll be able to say Scranton, Pennsylvania! The NYC MSA is now into the Poconos and continues to loom closer to us like a hungry, hungry hippo!

White Plains is nice. But yeah I like Jersey City too.

Jersey City is the largest (and gets the vote) but much smaller Hoboken and Weehawken are nice, too.

I really dig Weehawken too, seems like a down-to-earth little city.
Some parts of Newark are way too crime-infested to get my vote, but the city itself is amazing.

This is kind of biased. There really are only a few cities in the NYC metro area, but they're mostly in NJ. There aren't any "cities" on Long Island or in Orange/Rockland county. Poughkeepsie is the closest one, but that's still pretty far away. There's Yonkers and White Plains in Westchester, but that's about it.

By the way, I think Brick NJ was chosen as a best town in the US several times... Is this still in NY metro?

I'd say Newark is the best.

lol Newark???

I'd choose Yonkers. This thread should say towns and cities, not just cities. You rule out like 90% of the NY metro area. My favorite towns would be Levittown and Smithtown
