No one city stands out to me but as far as small towns I was struck by how awful the ones in West Virginia looked. Beautiful state, wonderful, down-to-earth people but terrible, impovershed little towns.
I agree with your sentiment about rural areas. It seems that the media has always focused on the problems in inner cities, but there are some pretty bad little out of the way rural areas, and some that are downright scary.
I'm with those who say this whole convo is stupid. It reminds me of YouTube where white kids in Europe (UK especally) talk about their ****ty little "hoodz" and how great it is to be like the Americans w/ respect to crime.
Anyway, funny story: I was on a subway train rolling trough Brooklyn and asked someone where such and such was, and this guy just looked up at me and was like "You know you're in Brooklyn, right? Cuz you don't look like it" (I look like a Bi-racial steve erkiel), and all I said to him was, "I just was coming up from Philly to check things out". He got real quiet and was like "Oh, Okay".
Up until that point, I didn't even know Philly was considered "Real" or "Hood".
I lived in North Philly for a few months in an area east of broad st, which was considered "the badlands". I've been through most the streets in that area and there are some really nasty looking blocks up there. Also West Philly, SW Philly, Camden and Chester are all some of the worst I've seen.
Ok why is Philly dirty why why why nobody is answering me so many people say that Philly is a dirty city how how!
well, it's kinda earned that rep for a while now. apparently Mayor Nagin called Philly dirtier than post-Katrina New Orleans lol
Quote:
After recently visiting Philadelphia, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin had this to say about the city:
"Let me tell you something. You ought to go to Philly and you will appreciate how clean New Orleans is. Just go and walk around Philly a little bit and you will appreciate. Am I lying? You will appreciate New Orleans. We still have some work to do but we definitely beat them by a long shot,"
Let's see...worst area I have ever seen personally? I would say it is a toss-up between North Avenue/Sandtown in Baltimore, and Over the Rhine in Cincinnati.
There may be worse neighborhoods in America, but those are both pretty awful.
Phoenix, the extensive sprawl and green lawns in the middle of the desert made me sick.
