I have a serious question for you guys. I want to know what your reasoning is for some of the things you say. I want you all to tell me you reasons behind each of these statements.

The north has more character than the south.
The south has no diversity.
There isn't any good weather in the south.
The south has no culture.

Because people that make sweeping generalizations are stupid. Cities such as Memphis, Nashville, Savannah, New Orleans have plenty of character and culture. I think the problem is that lots of northerners are exposed to places like Charlotte and Raleigh which largely lack character and culture(compared to the north).
As far as the weather, no matter what part of the country you are in, people are complaining about the weather.

It was mostly just a few posters on that "South vs. North" thread that make those statements. Those statements were all emotionally charged and directed more toward individual posters and not the South in general.

I believe the two that are in bold are true

I am not saying that every city/town in the south lacks culture and diversity. I am saying as a whole that the south lacks diversity and culture.

I live in Columbia SC. Everyone that lives here if from this area and believe it is the best thing since sliced bread. Noone wants to move or even travel anywhere else for that matter

EX) My uncle, who is from Charleston SC and has NEVER lived anywhere else went to NYC for a business trip with his company. He did his business each day and then went back to his hotel room and just sat there. He did not even want to experience NYC.

Everyone that lives where I live is from a small town in the deep south. These people have been exposed to NOTHING and it is really sad.

You and all the other posters STILL are not listening to what everyone is saying. Places like Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa and Charlotte are not like that.

It is the rural DEEP south that is the way described above.

These are the places where you can see bubba with a mullet who flies his rebel flag on his pick up truck that is covered in dirt from muddin

Do you see the difference between the new south and deep south?

Culture is a relative/subjective term. "Redneck Culture" and "Bible Belt Culture" or whatever you want to call it is still culture whether or not it appeals to you. Northern Cities or any city/region do NOT define what culture is for everywhere else. They have their own culture just like every other place on earth. Where I live there is a strong beach/surf culture but of course most fail to recognize that as culture. Culture isn't just museums, art galleries, and operas and the sad thing is many that enjoy those things are too full of it to realize that. The South does have culture, it is its own culture that it embraces and celebrates that many do not care for but it is still culture.

You can't just simply name certain cities and say that the rest of the region does not have any culture. I know people have their bias against the South but culture is something that the region does not lack. When I visit New Orleans, Savannah, Memphis, Mobile, Nashville, Richmond, and Charleston, I see a region that is dripping with culture.

If you're going to say the rural areas of the Deep South has no culture than the rural areas of every other region in the US has no culture.

I honestly disagree. Much of the South is divided into two major races whose ancestors orginally came from Europe and Africa. The mixing of these two races (plus the minority groups like the Cajuns and Latinos) living side by side for hundreds of years has created one of the most interesting cultures on the planet. This ALONE makes the South a FAR MORE DIVERSE and INTERESTING place and culture than most single race dominated nations in the old world.

This is directed to spade who is in SAN DIEGO and LInative who is in Long Island

I have experience Philly, Dallas and Phoenix before moving to SC

Why dont the two of you pack up from San Diego and Long Island and experience Huntsville Alabama, Baton Rouge Louisiania or any other small town in the deep south?

Once you do that and live in the deep south for a couple of years then shoot me a email and let me know how it turned out

You would not be singing the same tune after you experienced it for yourself

..are false; the only one that I would qualify is the "diversity" statement. I do believe that, until the last generation, the South as a whole was probably less diverse than most Northern cities. Much of the South consisted largely of Anglo-Saxon white Protestants, along with African-Americans. The waves of immigrants from Europe (Ireland, Italy, Germany, Poland, Scandinavia, other Slavic states) largely bypassed the South, and settled in Northeastern and Midwestern cities.Hence, the reason you generally don't find many Little Italys in the South. This is changing, however, and quite rapidly, because of increased mobility, and it's especially evident in such places as Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Virginia, and any number of Texan cities. So I do believe that Northern cities had the edge for several generations, but it's rapidly disappearing.

My post was in response to the NONSENSE you posted that the South has no diversity or culture. Please, without trying to change the subject to living in Huntsville or Baton Rouge, explain to us how the Southern states are not diverse?
