I was just reading a post comparing different waterfronts and there was a reference to roof decks. I am curious in that the reference was made about Baltimore (maybe the closet in housing stock to my hometown Philly) but it got me thinking, is there a roofdeck culture in many cities. Philadelphia and Baltimore with an abundance of row homes offer the ability for roof decks (sometimes the only place for a deck) and also many residences go from the street vertical to the roof unlike apartment buildings which may have a community/shared space.

I am curious, what cities have a significant roof deck culture and which do not? Because of the housing stock, would Philadelphia and Baltimore be more likely because sheer lack of outdoor space in rowhomes coupled with many single residences street to roof?

Here are some shots of examples of Philadelphia row home roof decks.

Well I am interested in thoughts and pictures, when I was recently in the market a roof deck was a key criteria for me. Also many are accesed in odd ways (through closets, bedrooms, bathrooms etc.) Guess space can be a premium at times.

I know in D.C. (or at least parts of it, like Capitol Hill) you are not allowed to have roof decks that are visible from the street. A family friend built one on top of her row house. At night you can look out over the city and you have the Capitol Building lit up in front of you...so beautiful, it reminds me of what Paris would look like.

Would agree, the monuments would be quite the backdrop at night

One of my favorite evenings was a rooftop event at the library of congress looking accross at the capital and into the mall at dusk into early evening, breathtaking

Boston has some great roof decks in pretty much all the core neighborhoods.

Charlestown

North End

Beacon Hill (yours for only $15 mil!)

South End

There are some awesome deck parties by students in the Northeastern/BU area but I can't really find any pictures online.

That is spectacular!

It's tough to beat a roof deck party in the summer.

Heres one from Baltimore - You can see some rooftop decks there too. I think they are pretty ugly

Chicago is covered with them, especially on the north side. I don't even know how many rooftops I've been up on at parties, but they're pretty cool. They normally offer an awesome view of the skyline.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw this thread.

I love roofdecks. Some are definitely better looking than others, but I figure they're all nicer looking than a flat tar roof, and they're awesome to chill on...so why not?
